When we needed an extraordinary symbol that would mark the milestone of the 100th Anniversary, who better to turn to than Scouts themselves.

For 100 years, Scouting has been helping the youth of America find - in themselves and in the world around them - more than they thought possible.

National Logo Contest Winner - Philip Goolkasian

Overall and Eagle category winner!

Quick Facts:

Philip Goolkasian
Fresno, Calif.
Eagle Scout
Troop 223, Sequoia Council

Philip is active not only in Scouts, but in his school and community too. His leadership is evident beyond the 34 merit badges and bronze and gold palms he has earned. Philip’s awards and activities have included: Pioneer Hiker award, Junior Leader Training Course, National Youth Leadership Training Staff, National Junior Leadership Instructor Camp, National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience, and Order of the Arrow. Additionally, he has held a variety of leadership positions in Troop 223 including Senior Patrol Leader, Champlain’s Aide, Troop Guide, and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster — just to name a few!

Those are just Philip's Scouting achievements. Outside of Scouting, he is the Associated Student Body President, and will be valedictorian of his high school class. He has a 4.67 grade-point average. He is also an accomplished piano player who often provides the music for school and parish masses, along with fundraisers and Knights of Columbus dinners.

Scouting is a family affair for the Goolkasian’s. Philip’s father taught Philip the Scout Law at age five. His father is an Eagle Scout and served as Scoutmaster for three years. He currently is Assistant Scoutmaster for Philip’s troop. Philip’s younger brothers are both active in Scouting as well.

Why Philip's Entry Was Chosen

Philip's design took the traditional elements of Scouting and integrated them to create something new and modern. The eagle cutting through the letters B and S fashions a look that is both dynamic and elegant. His design overcomes a common challenge for creating a good logo. He incorporates all of the necessary the elements, but simplifies them into a strong, concise statement. Philip’s logo succeeds in communicating the essence of the Boy Scouts of America and the 100th Anniversary, while resisting the urge to add unnecessary elements.
